After attending a couple interviews, I began to notice that there was a direct relationship between the number of interviews I had attended and my playfulness in upcoming interviews. Here are the most memorable exchanges and monologues from my interviews.( I tried to keep the wording as close to what was said but there are some differences):<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"comp-iijmjkzw_SinglePostMediaTop_MediaPost__0_0__type_MediaPost\" class=\" flex_vbox\" data-reactid=\".0.$SITE_ROOT.$desktop_siteRoot.$PAGES_CONTAINER.1.1.$SITE_PAGES.$mxsid.1.$comp-iijmjkzw.0.0.$child.$0.1.$1.$5\">\n<div id=\"comp-iijmjkzw_SinglePostMediaTop_MediaPost__0_0_mediaText\" class=\"s48\" data-proxy-name=\"MediaLabel\" data-reactid=\".0.$SITE_ROOT.$desktop_siteRoot.$PAGES_CONTAINER.1.1.$SITE_PAGES.$mxsid.1.$comp-iijmjkzw.0.0.$child.$0.1.$1.$5.$0\" data-width=\"630\">\n<div id=\"comp-iijmjkzw_SinglePostMediaTop_MediaPost__0_0_mediaTextrichTextContainer\" class=\"s48_richTextContainer s48richTextContainer\" data-reactid=\".0.$SITE_ROOT.$desktop_siteRoot.$PAGES_CONTAINER.1.1.$SITE_PAGES.$mxsid.1.$comp-iijmjkzw.0.0.$child.$0.1.$1.$5.$0.0\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;What will a co-op learn at the end of co-op that he\/she may not have known before coming?&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;How to drink beer and order at a bar&#8221; **facepalm**<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><br \/>\n<strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;What will a co-op learn at the end of co-op that he\/she may not have learned before coming?&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>First Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;[insert technical skills]&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Second interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;if you&#8217;re lucky, you&#8217;re also learn how to fall asleep pretending to be writing code. We have a senior guy who does that and he would &#8211; &#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Me, so baffled by answer to accidentally interrupted the interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;Does he do that during meetings?&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>First Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;Yes, though some of the meetings are boring&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;We have six midterms coming up next week&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;[Cheerfully] Oh, that must suck&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;You&#8217;re just saying that&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>Interviewer:<\/strong> \u201c[something mindblowing]\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cOh, snapindoodles\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>\u00a0Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;So you&#8217;ve developed games&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;Yes, although I do prefer playing games over making games&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>\u00a0Me:<\/strong> &#8220;How do you decide who to pick based on a 10 minute conversation&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;We already have an idea of who to pick and we would like to hear the sound of the applicants&#8217; voices&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;Aww, that&#8217;s romantic\u2026oh sorry, that wasn&#8217;t professional, this is an interview&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong> Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your C# skills?&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;-1 [laughs] okay, 3&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>\u00a0Interviewer<\/strong>: &#8220;On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your C# skills?&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Me, realizing 3 is too low:<\/strong> &#8220;6.5&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>Interviewer:<\/strong> \u201cOn a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your C# skills?\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>Me, the interview started off with CLR and CIL, 6.5 would be too high now:<\/strong> \u201c5\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>\u00a0Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;Why did you apply for this posting?&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;Do you want to hear the real reason or the interview reason?&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;We&#8217;ll take the real reason and pretend you said the interview one&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;The reason was because there were &#8211; wait, were there like 5 applicants?&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;There were 30&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;Oh, for some of the other jobs, I applied because there were only 5 applicants but in that case, for this one [proceeds to say real reason for applying]&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>\u00a0Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;What is object-oriented programming&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Me, still super nervous and speaking at 9000WPM:<\/strong> &#8220;It&#8217;s based on the SOLID principles and [some other stuff, 15s later], um, I&#8217;m actually not quite sure how to describe it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>\u00a0Me, about a math problem:<\/strong> &#8220;How many regions do you think will be formed by connecting all the diagonals?&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;There will be 18&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;That&#8217;s close, there&#8217;s actually [I look at diagram] wait, how did you get 18?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>Me:<\/strong> &#8220;It sounds like Security Automation is a technically demanding position. You&#8217;ll need big shoes to do this job and I have big feet! I think I&#8217;m ready for this position&#8221;. Almost died of embarrassment after saying this. Thank goodness the interviewers laughed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>\u00a0Interviewer:<\/strong> \u201cThe company gives us these rules\u2026and we don\u2019t follow it\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>\u00a0Interviewer:<\/strong> \u201cAnd we b**** about [something]\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>\u00a0Interviewer:<\/strong> \u201cWhat\u2019s my job again?\u201d [Later\u2026] \u201cOh right, that\u2019s what I do!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>\u00a0Interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;We all have something to do, except for [second interviewer]&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>\u00a0Interviewer:<\/strong> \u201cAre you legally allowed to work in Canada?\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>Me, shocked by the question:<\/strong> \u201c[sarcastically] Actually, I\u2019m not\u201d. I learned from this experience and was better prepared next time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><strong>\u00a0Interviewer:<\/strong> \u201cAre you legally allowed to work in Canada?\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>Me, ready now:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m actually from North Korea so\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\">Although most of my interviews created positive impressions, some made for insultfully bad experiences and funny stories! These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\">\u00a0&#8211; the co-op staff who agreed to lend me a room in the co-op office for a programming interview kicks me out of the room at the very moment when I was doing the programming part of the interview. After the interviewe, she looks at me and smiles &#8220;See, that didn&#8217;t go so bad.&#8221; As you probably guessed, I didn&#8217;t get an offer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\">\u00a0&#8211; <strong>Me, to both interviewers:\u00a0<\/strong> &#8220;Would you like to take a look at my app?&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>First interviewer:<\/strong> &#8220;Sure&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Second interviewer, arms crossed, legs crossed, leaning back on chair, expressionless:<\/strong> &#8220;[eyes shift to first interviewer and raises one eyebrow. Might as well as have said &#8216;Seriously dude!? You actually want to check out his app?&#8217;]. Ouch<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\">\u00a0&#8211; the interviewers arrive 10 minutes late and were setting up their equipment during the interview. The main interviewer looked at the door for the entire duration of the interview. Another looked bored and later left the room to help set up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\"><br \/>\n&#8211; I turned to the right during a phone interview. Face touches the &#8220;End call&#8221; button&#8230;happened twice during the interview! Man, the interviewers must have had a good laugh after the interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span class=\"transparent\">From these negative experiences, I decided that if I become an interviewer, I would always treat applicants with respect and sincerity, regardless of their their skill level or beliefs. It is almost always nerve-biting to know that a 30-minute or 1-hour interview will determine where you work next term.
